Optic ID Authenticates You Using Infrared Cameras

Optic ID can be used to unlock your Apple Vision Pro. Using infrared cameras, Optic ID determines whether the person wearing Apple Vision Pro is the enrolled user. Other uses of Optic ID include making payments with Apple Pay, making purchases within the App Store, and authenticating within apps.

Optic ID data — including mathematical representations of your iris — are encrypted and protected with a key available only to the Secure Enclave. This data will be refined and updated as you use Optic ID to improve your experience, including when you successfully authenticate.

Optic ID data does not leave your device and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else.

You Have Control Over Optic ID

If you choose to enroll in Optic ID, you can control how it is used or disable it at any time. For example, if you don’t want to use Optic ID to unlock your Apple Vision Pro, go to Settings > Optic ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then tap to turn off Vision Pro Unlock. To disable Optic ID, go to Settings > Optic ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then tap Reset Optic ID. Doing so will delete Optic ID data, including mathematical representations of your iris, from your device. If you choose to erase or reset your device, all Optic ID data will be deleted.

Optic ID and Apps

Within supported apps, you can authenticate using Optic ID. Apps are notified only as to whether the authentication is successful. Apps can’t access Optic ID data.

Continuous Authentication

Once you have authenticated using Optic ID, you will remain authenticated until you remove the device, so you can take actions such as using Apple Pay without reauthenticating.
