Apple Unveils 17-inch Flat Screen iMac

The Ultimate Digital Hub for Digital Music, Photos and Movies

Apple today unveiled its new top-endiMac featuring a stunning 17-inch widescreen LCD that floats in mid-air,allowing users to effortlessly adjust its height or angle with just a touch.The 17-inch LCD flat-screen iMac also features an 800MHz PowerPC G4processor, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics, a SuperDrive for playing and burningCDs and DVDs, and a large 80GB hard drive that can hold more than six hoursof video, 15,000 songs and 73,000 digital photos. The new 17-inch iMac alsoincludes Apple's amazing iTunes*, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD applications,making it the ultimate Digital Hub for digital music, photos and movies.

Designed around an ultra-compact base, the flat-panel iMac's spacious17-inch widescreen LCD appears to float in mid-air, allowing users toeffortlessly adjust its height or angle with just a touch. At just one-inch-thin, the 17-inch widescreen display has a wide aspect ratio of 16:10,allowing users to watch DVDs in letter-box format, easily view multiplewindows at one time or enjoy the ultimate computer gaming experience. Withapproximately the same viewing area as a 19-inch CRT, the new display has aresolution of 1440-by-900 pixels, 64 percent more pixels than the 15-inchflat-screen iMac.
Every iMac includes Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestylesoftware, including the new iTunes 3 for organising and burning digitalmusic, iMovie for creating digital movies and iPhoto for organising andsharing digital photos. The new 17-inch flat-screen iMac also offers therevolutionary SuperDrive and Apple's iDVD software to let users easilycreate and burn their own custom DVDs that play in consumer DVD players.
The four-model iMac family features:
  •  a 17-inch widescreen LCD or 15-inch flat-screen display;
  •  an 800MHz or 700MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine;
  •  two FireWire and five USB ports for fast, simple, plug-and-playconnections to digital devices such as digital MP3 players, still camerasand DV camcorders;
  •  built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet and 56K V.90 modem;
  •  an internal 18-watt digital amplifier for great stereo sound and ApplePro Speakers on selected models;
  •  a collection of productivity and entertainment titles includingAppleWorks, Mac OS X Mail, FAXstf, Top Calculette Pro, WorldBookEncyclopedia, Pangea's Otto Matic, Deimos Rising and
  •  Mac OS X version 10.2, Apple's next-generation operating system.

The new 17-inch widescreen LCD iMac is expected to be available early nextmonth, and the three 15-inch flat screen iMac models, with a new lower pricethan the high-end model, are available immediately through the Apple Store and Apple Authorised Resellers. The 17-inch widescreen LCD iMac, for a suggested selling price of £1,649(inc VAT), £1,403 (ex VAT), includes:

  •  NVIDIA GeForce4 MX with 32MB DDR memory;
  •  256MB SDRAM;
  •  80GB Ultra ATA hard drive; and
  •  Apple Pro Speakers.
The 15-inch flat screen iMac, for a suggested selling price of £1,499 (incVAT), £1,276 (ex VAT), includes:
  •  an 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine;
  •  DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive optical drive;
  •  NVIDIA GeForce2 MX with 32MB DDR memory;
  •  256MB SDRAM;
  •  60GB Ultra ATA hard drive; and
  •  Apple Pro Speakers.
The 15-inch flat screen iMac, for a suggested selling price of £1,349 (incVAT), £1,148 (ex VAT), includes:
  •  a 700MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine;
  •  DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo optical drive;
  •  NVIDIA GeForce2 MX with 32MB DDR memory;
  •  256MB SDRAM;
  •  40GB Ultra ATA hard drive; and
  •  Apple Pro Speakers.
The 15-inch flat screen iMac, for a suggested selling price of £1,149 (incVAT, £978 (ex VAT), includes:
  •  a 700MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine;
  •  CD-RW optical drive;
  •  NVIDIA GeForce2 MX with 32MB DDR memory;
  •  128MB SDRAM; and
  •  40GB Ultra ATA hard drive.
Build-to-order options and accessories include additional memory, Apple ProSpeakers, AirPort Base Station, AirPort Card and the AppleCare ProtectionPlan.
